Don't Get Scammed, Sinton!
The Sinton PD has seen a recent surge in online and cell phone cyber crimes. Scammers are everywhere, from fake online sales to convincing "spoofed" calls from companies you trust. Don't fall for their tricks!
Even though apps like Venmo and Cash App often warn you, we've seen victims ignore these warnings and lose significant amounts of money. One recent case involved a "Microsoft support" scam that cost a gentleman over $30,000 in cash!
Red Flags to Watch For:
"Too Good to Be True" Offers: If it sounds unbelievable, it probably is.
Unexpected Calls Asking for Info: Companies like Verizon, AT&T, Wells Fargo, and your pharmacy will rarely cold-call you for private information or account details. This is a classic scam tactic.
Don't Trust Caller ID: Scammers can easily manipulate caller ID. We know—we've used it in serious criminal investigations!
Urgent Demands: Scammers often create a false sense of urgency ("Act now or your account will be closed!").
Suspicious Links: Be extra cautious of links in unexpected texts or emails, especially if they are shortened or look slightly off.
Protect Yourself:
Never give out sensitive information over an unsolicited call or text.
Never reply to an unsolicited text. 
If you're unsure, hang up and call the company directly using a trusted number from a bill or their official website.
Never call back a number provided by a suspicious caller or texter.
